A GBP category (Google Business Profile category) is the classification you assign to your business profile that tells Google what type of business you are and what products or services you offer. Categories directly influence which searches your business appears for in local results.
Primary vs. secondary categories
Every Google Business Profile has one primary category and can have up to nine secondary categories.
- Primary category -- the most important classification. It has the strongest influence on which searches trigger your listing. Choose the category that most accurately describes your main business activity.
- Secondary categories -- additional categories that describe other services you offer. They carry less weight than the primary but help your profile appear for a wider range of relevant searches.
For example, a dental practice might set "Dentist" as the primary category and add "Cosmetic Dentist," "Pediatric Dentist," and "Emergency Dental Service" as secondary categories.
Why do GBP categories matter?
Categories are one of the strongest relevance signals for local search. If someone searches "Italian restaurant" and your primary category is "Italian Restaurant," your listing is much more likely to appear than if your category is just "Restaurant."
Choosing overly broad or incorrect categories means your business may not show up for the searches that matter most. Choosing categories that don't accurately represent your business can lead to profile suspensions.
How to choose the right GBP categories
- Pick the most specific category available for your primary business activity
- Only add secondary categories for services you actually provide
- Check what categories your top-ranking local competitors use
- Review Google's full list of available categories -- it changes regularly as Google adds new options
For multi-location businesses, different locations may need different category configurations based on the services offered at each site.
