Custom Agents let you describe a Google Business Profile task in simple English and turn it into an automation with a trigger, conditions, and an action.

## Overview

Use Custom Agents when a standard review automation does not cover the workflow you need.

For example, you can ask Localith to:

- reply to 5-star reviews with a friendly thank-you message
- notify your team when a location receives a negative review
- send an email when a location's rating drops below 4 stars
- answer common customer questions using your business instructions
- alert you when important profile activity changes

Localith analyzes your description, proposes an automation, and lets you review the setup before activating it.

## Before you start

Before creating a Custom Agent, make sure:

- your Google Business Profiles are connected to Localith
- you know which locations the agent should monitor
- you can describe the event that should start the automation
- you know what the agent should do when the event happens
- your team has agreed on any reply tone, language, or approval rules

Each completed agent action uses **1 AI credit**. You can review the expected cost before activating the agent and pause it later when needed.

## Create a Custom Agent

1. Open **Responses** from the main Localith navigation.
2. Select **AI agents team**.
3. Click **New agent** in the top-right corner.
4. Select **Custom agent**.
5. Enter a clear name for the agent.
6. Describe the automation you want in plain English.
7. Click **Continue** to let Localith build the automation.

A useful description includes both the trigger and the expected action.

For example:

> When a customer leaves a 5-star review, reply in a friendly tone, thank them for visiting, and keep the response under three sentences.

You can also create a pre-built agent for replying to reviews or answering questions from the **New agent** menu.

## Review the automation

After processing your description, Localith shows the automation it detected. Review each part before saving:

- **Trigger**: the event the agent watches for
- **Conditions**: the rules that determine when it should run
- **Locations**: the Google Business Profiles covered by the agent
- **Action**: what Localith should do when the conditions match
- **AI settings**: the tone, language, and custom instructions used for generated content
- **Credit cost**: the number of credits used when the action runs

If the suggested setup does not match your request, edit the trigger, conditions, or action before activating the agent.

## Configure AI replies

When the agent's action is to reply to a review or answer a question, choose how the response should be created.

### Use an AI-generated response

Choose the AI option when you want each response to adapt to the customer's message.

Configure:

- **Tone**: Professional, Friendly, or Casual
- **Language**: use your selected language or respond in the customer's language
- **Custom instructions**: add business-specific rules, brand voice guidance, phrases to avoid, or escalation instructions

Preview a generated response before activating the agent. This helps you confirm that the instructions produce the tone and level of detail your brand expects.

### Use a response template

Choose a manual template when the same approved wording should be used every time the conditions match.

Templates are useful for highly controlled messages. AI-generated responses are better when the reply should reflect the details of each review or question.

## Save and activate the agent

When the automation is ready, choose one of the following:

- **Save & Activate** to start monitoring the selected locations
- **Save as Draft** to keep the setup without running it

Start with a limited group of locations when testing a new agent. Review its first actions before applying the same automation across a larger location network.

## Manage your agents

The **AI agents team** page shows the agents created for your account. Agent cards provide a quick view of the agent name, description, tone, and connected automations.

Open an agent to:

- edit its trigger, conditions, locations, or action
- update AI instructions, tone, or language
- pause or resume the agent
- review execution history and activity logs
- check the credits used by completed actions
- test the automation with sample data
- delete an agent you no longer need

Agents may be shown as **Active**, **Paused**, or **Draft**, depending on their current state.

## Available triggers and actions

Custom Agents can be configured around supported Google Business Profile activity.

Common triggers include:

- a new review, with optional rating conditions
- a new question or inquiry
- a new Google Post
- a rating drop
- an increase or decrease in search views or clicks
- a change to business information
- a new photo

Common actions include:

- reply with an AI-generated or template response
- answer a customer question
- send an email to a team member
- create an in-app notification

The settings shown in the preview depend on the trigger and action Localith detects from your description.

## Tips for writing effective agent instructions

- State the trigger first: "When a new 1-star review arrives..."
- Describe the action clearly: "...send an email to the location manager."
- Add conditions only when they matter: "...for locations in the Lisbon group."
- Define the reply style: "...use a professional tone and do not offer refunds."
- Keep one agent focused on one main outcome.
- Use drafts and limited-location tests before activating high-volume automations.

## Custom Agents vs. review auto-responder

Use the review auto-responder when you need a straightforward review workflow based on predefined rating rules.

Use a Custom Agent when you need:

- a plain-English setup process
- additional triggers beyond new reviews
- more specific conditions
- notifications or email actions
- custom AI instructions for a particular business workflow

For a standard review automation, see [Reply Agent Setup](/docs/ai-review-reply/reply-agent-setup/). For brand voice controls, see [Tone & Language Settings](/docs/ai-review-reply/tone-language-settings/).

## Common questions

**Q: Do I need technical automation knowledge to create an agent?**

No. Describe the workflow in simple English. Localith converts the request into a structured trigger, conditions, and action that you can review.

**Q: Does a Custom Agent start running immediately?**

Only when you choose **Save & Activate**. Choose **Save as Draft** if the setup still needs review.

**Q: How much does an agent cost to run?**

Each executed action uses 1 AI credit. Activity logs show credit usage, and you can pause an agent to stop new actions.

**Q: Can one agent manage several locations?**

Yes. Select the locations the agent should cover during configuration.

**Q: Can I edit an agent after activating it?**

Yes. Open the agent to update its settings, instructions, locations, or status.

**Q: Should negative review replies be fully automated?**

Use additional care with sensitive complaints. Test the instructions first and keep high-risk cases in an approval or notification workflow when human review is needed.
